SLS Playa Mujeres has one of the most unusual proposal settings near Cancún: from roughly February to November the sun rises from behind Isla Mujeres, directly in front of the beach. A sunrise proposal on the pier, if the resort allows access, is hard to beat. For an evening plan, choose Jungle Beach in the last half hour of light. Coverage starts at 245 USD.
Most proposal advice says sunset. At SLS Playa Mujeres we often say sunrise. The resort sits at the southern end of Playa Mujeres, with Isla Mujeres directly across the channel, and for most of the year the sun comes up from behind the island. Add a pier and an empty beach at 6:30 am, and you have a proposal setting few couples ever think of. Here is how to plan it, and the evening alternative.
The Plan at a Glance
- Sunrise planThe pier or Central Beach, roughly February to November
- Sunset planJungle Beach, the last 30 minutes of light
- PhotographerWaits as a guest, 20 to 40 metres away
- DecorOptional, arranged through the resort

The Sunrise Proposal
The idea is simple: a "sunrise walk" that ends at the pier or at the water's edge just as the sun clears Isla Mujeres. At that hour the resort is asleep, so there is nobody in the background and no need to hide among other guests. The photographer waits at the base of the pier or on the sand with a long lens, and the light behind you is warm and low.
Ask the resort in advance whether the pier is open at that hour; piers are sometimes closed for safety or used for boats. If it is not available, Central Beach at the water's edge works almost as well, with the island right in front of you.
The excuse matters more at sunrise than at sunset. A coffee on the beach, a sunrise photo for social media or an early yoga plan are all believable. Have a robe or light jacket ready; mornings in winter can feel cool by the water.

The Sunset Alternative
If sunrise is impossible, choose Jungle Beach in the last half hour before sunset. It is smaller and greener than the main beach, with vegetation behind the sand, so it feels private even on a full resort. The sun sets behind the resort, which gives soft, even light on your faces and a deep blue sea as the moment ends.

The sun rises behind Isla Mujeres from roughly February through November. In December and January it comes up just to the south of the island, still over the water and still beautiful.
Moments on Playa Mujeres, Through Our Lens
Couples and weddings we have photographed on this shoreline and on the island across the channel.

Hiding, Access and After the Yes
Our photographer checks in as your guest and waits 20 to 40 metres away, shooting the walk up, the kneel and the reaction without moving, then joins you after the yes. We agree three signals: a message when you leave the room, the marker where you stop, and the moment you turn your partner toward the sea. For access, the photographer's name goes on your reservation at the front desk; a short private session for a staying guest is very seldom charged the outside vendor fee used for weddings, but we confirm it with the resort in writing.
Afterwards we take 20 to 40 minutes of portraits while the light lasts. Proposal coverage uses our session collections: Spark, 245 USD for 35 minutes and 15 photos; Glow Hour, 325 USD for 45 minutes and 25 photos; and Essential Flow, 395 USD for 60 minutes and 35 photos. The gallery arrives in one to three business days. More on our surprise proposal photographer page and in proposing at sunrise on Isla Mujeres.
