At Excellence Playa Mujeres you have two good options: a rooftop terrace proposal in your own suite, completely private, or the water's edge in the last half hour before sunset, with Isla Mujeres on the horizon. Either way the photographer waits out of sight and shoots from a distance. Coverage starts at 245 USD and the photos arrive in one to three business days.
Excellence Playa Mujeres suits a proposal because it gives you a choice most resorts do not: a public, cinematic setting on a calm beach, or a completely private one on a rooftop terrace above the palms. Both work, and they produce very different photographs. This is how we plan each one, including where the photographer hides, the minute to ask and what to do with the twenty minutes after the yes.

Option One: the Rooftop Terrace
Excellence Playa Mujeres has suites with private rooftop terraces, including two-storey categories with the terrace above the bedroom. If your partner is shy, or would hate an audience, this is the proposal we recommend: nobody else is there, the view runs over the palms to the sea, and you can take as long as you need.
The usual sequence: the resort, or a decorator you book through it, sets up flowers and candles on the terrace while you are both at dinner or the spa. Our photographer is let up a few minutes before you return and waits in the stairwell or behind a planter, wherever the layout hides them best. You bring your partner up "to see the sunset". The photographer shoots the reaction to the set-up, the kneel and the yes, then joins you for portraits on the terrace while the light is still warm.
Two things make or break it. First, timing: the terrace needs to be ready and the photographer in place before you walk up, so we agree a message you send when you leave dinner. Second, light: the sun sets behind the resort, so on the terrace you get warm side light in the last half hour. A few candles help after sunset, but string lights or lanterns photograph much better than dozens of small tea lights.
Option Two: the Water's Edge
If you want the ocean in the photograph, walk down to the beach in the last 30 minutes before sunset. The sea in front of Playa Mujeres is calm and shallow, the sand is wide and pale, and the horizon holds only the low line of Isla Mujeres. Choose a spot away from the beach bar and the pool, so that the other guests are behind the photographer, not behind you.
Because the beach faces east, there is no glare in your faces at that hour: the shoreline is lit softly and evenly, which is exactly what you want for a reaction you cannot repeat. We mark the spot in advance, a particular palm, lounger or post, and you simply stop there and turn your partner to face the sea.

When to Ask, Month by Month
We plan the moment itself for about 25 minutes before sunset, leaving the best light for photographs afterwards. Times for this beach on the 15th of each month in 2027:
| Month | Sunrise | Golden | Sunset |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 7:27 am | 5:54 pm | 6:26 pm |
| March | 6:56 am | 6:27 pm | 6:57 pm |
| May | 6:09 am | 6:47 pm | 7:18 pm |
| June | 6:05 am | 6:58 pm | 7:30 pm |
| July | 6:14 am | 7:01 pm | 7:32 pm |
| September | 6:34 am | 6:21 pm | 6:50 pm |
| November | 6:58 am | 5:34 pm | 6:06 pm |
| December | 7:17 am | 5:35 pm | 6:08 pm |
If your partner is an early riser, sunrise is a quiet alternative. From this end of Playa Mujeres the sun comes up from behind Isla Mujeres for most of the year, roughly August through April, and at 6:30 am you will have the beach to yourselves.
Where the Photographer Waits
On the beach, our photographer arrives early, checks in as your guest and sits on a lounger 20 to 40 metres from the marker with a long lens, looking like anyone else enjoying the end of the day. On the terrace, they wait out of sight inside the suite's layout. In both cases they shoot without moving until after the yes, and only then come over.
We agree three signals with you: a message when you leave, the marker, and the moment you turn your partner around. You do not need to look for us. For access, the photographer's name goes on your reservation at the front desk; as with any adults-only resort, the photographer must be over 18. For a short private session, a staying guest is very seldom charged the outside vendor fee used for weddings, but we confirm the current policy with the resort in writing first.

After the Yes
Once the ring is on, we spend 20 to 40 minutes on relaxed portraits: on the terrace if you started there, then down at the water's edge as the sea turns blue, or the other way round. These are the frames with the ring, the ones you will send home that night.
Proposal coverage uses our session collections. Spark is 245 USD for 35 minutes and 15 photos; Glow Hour, 325 USD for 45 minutes and 25 photos, is the most common choice; and Essential Flow, 395 USD for 60 minutes and 35 photos, is ideal if you want both the terrace and the beach. The edited gallery arrives in one to three business days. For more ideas, see our surprise proposal photographer page and the guide to coordinating with a resort concierge.
