Where to Propose on the Property
The water's edge. Our first choice at Secrets Playa Mujeres. The sea here is calm and shallow, the sand is pale, and the horizon holds only Isla Mujeres, so a wide frame of the two of you looks private even on a full resort. Walk away from the beach bar and the main pool so that other guests are behind the photographer rather than behind you.
The wedding gazebo. Elevated, open-air and facing the ocean, it gives a clear setting and some shelter if the afternoon turns grey. It is often booked for ceremonies, so check with the front desk or your Secrets concierge on the day. Proposals here feel slightly more formal, and they photograph beautifully from the sand below.
The golf course edge. For couples who would rather nobody watch, the land side is the most private place on the property, and it is where the sun actually sets over water. It needs the resort's permission and works only after play has finished, so we arrange it in advance.
The Right Minute, Month by Month
We plan the question itself for about 25 minutes before sunset. That leaves time for the photographs afterwards in the best light, and the beach is already emptying for dinner. Times for this beach on the 15th of each month in 2027:

The beach faces east, so the sun sets behind the resort and the shoreline takes on soft, even light, which is kind to tears and nervous smiles. If your partner is a morning person, consider sunrise instead: from roughly October through February the sun comes up from behind Isla Mujeres, the sand is empty and the photographer can stand anywhere without being noticed.
How the Photographer Stays Hidden
The surprise depends on the photographer looking like any other guest, and at a resort that is easy. Our photographer arrives twenty minutes early, checks in as your guest, and settles on a sun lounger or at the edge of the beach with a long lens, 20 to 40 metres from the spot. We agree on a marker in advance, often a particular lounger, palm or the gazebo steps, and you simply walk there with your partner.
Three signals keep it simple: you send a message when you leave the room, you stop at the marker, and you turn your partner to face the sea. The photographer shoots the walk up, the kneel and the reaction without moving, then comes over only after the yes. You do not need to look for us, and you should not; the best reaction photographs are the ones where nobody knows we are there.
Access is straightforward for a staying guest: the photographer's name goes on your reservation at the front desk, and for a short private session a staying guest is very seldom asked for the outside vendor fee used for weddings. We confirm the current policy with the resort in writing beforehand.

Decor, the Resort and the Ring
Secrets resorts can arrange romantic set-ups through the concierge, from flowers and candles on the beach to a private dinner afterwards, at the resort's own prices. If you want decor, book it through the resort at least a few days ahead and ask them to place it at the agreed marker. A set-up is not essential: on this beach a simple walk to the water at the right minute photographs just as well, and is easier to keep secret.
Two practical notes. Keep the ring in a pocket that closes, because the sand is soft and the shallows are tempting. After the Yes: the Mini Session
Once the question is answered, we take 20 to 40 minutes of relaxed portraits while the light is still good: along the shoreline, at the gazebo and, if you like, on the golf course edge as the sun goes down. This is where you get the photos with the ring, the ones you send to family that night.
