Secrets Playa Mujeres is an adults-only resort of about 424 suites on the quiet Costa Mujeres shore north of Cancún. Its wedding listings name an elevated oceanfront gazebo for up to 150 guests and the beach for up to 300. The beach faces east toward Isla Mujeres, so the sun sets behind the resort: plan the ceremony about 90 minutes before sunset and keep the last 30 minutes for portraits.
Secrets Playa Mujeres sits on one of the calmest stretches of sand in the Cancún area, with Isla Mujeres on the horizon and a golf course behind it instead of a highway. It is adults-only, which changes the feel of a wedding day: no splash pools in the background of your family photos and a quiet beach at the hour that matters. This is our working guide to photographing a wedding there, written from the photographer's side: where the ceremony should go, what the light does in each month, how to build the timeline and what to ask the resort before you sign.
The Resort at a Glance
Before the venue tour, here is what matters for photography in one list. Capacities come from the resort's wedding listings and change with renovations, so treat your coordinator's current sheet as the final word.
- ResortAdults-only, all-inclusive, Secrets brand (Hyatt Inclusive Collection)
- SizeAbout 424 suites, per the resort's own description
- Ceremony sitesWedding Gazebo (up to 150) and the beach (up to 300), per wedding listings
- Next doorDreams Playa Mujeres, with shared access for guests
- Golf18 holes designed by Greg Norman
- Beach facesEast, across the channel to Isla Mujeres
- From the airportAbout 40 to 50 minutes by road
Two of those lines shape everything that follows. Adults-only means your backgrounds stay clean all day, which is rare at a resort this size. And a beach that faces east means the sun rises over the water and sets behind the buildings, which decides when your ceremony should start.
Gazebo or Beach: What Each Does to Your Photos
The Wedding Gazebo is listed as an elevated, open-air ceremony spot with an ocean view, for up to 150 guests. Elevation is the photographic gift here. Because the platform sits above the sand, a wide frame from the back of the aisle puts the two of you against open sea rather than against beach chairs and other guests. The trade-off is shade: under the roof your faces sit in shadow while the sea behind is bright, a gap of two or three stops. We handle it by placing the officiant so you face slightly toward the open side, and with a reflector or soft fill from the aisle when the afternoon is very bright.
The beach, listed for up to 300 guests, is the open, barefoot version. On this shore it photographs beautifully because the water is calm and pale, and there are no towers on the horizon, only the low line of Isla Mujeres. What to plan for: wind off the channel lifts veils and hair, chair legs sink into soft sand, and before about 4 pm the sand reflects hard light up into faces. A beach ceremony here wants a late start.
For the reception, the listings name the beach for larger groups and the Bordeaux restaurant for dinners of up to 80. If the reception is indoors, ask for a ten minute window at blue hour to step back outside; we explain why below.

Sunrise, Sunset and the Isla Mujeres Effect
Quintana Roo stays on the same clock all year, with no daylight saving, so the only thing moving your timeline is the season. These are the times for this exact stretch of beach, calculated for the 15th of each month in 2027. "Golden" marks when the sun drops below six degrees and the light turns warm and soft.
| Month | Sunrise | Golden | Sunset |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 7:27 am | 5:54 pm | 6:26 pm |
| March | 6:56 am | 6:27 pm | 6:57 pm |
| May | 6:09 am | 6:47 pm | 7:18 pm |
| June | 6:05 am | 6:58 pm | 7:30 pm |
| July | 6:14 am | 7:01 pm | 7:32 pm |
| September | 6:34 am | 6:21 pm | 6:50 pm |
| November | 6:58 am | 5:34 pm | 6:06 pm |
| December | 7:17 am | 5:35 pm | 6:08 pm |
The beach faces east, so the sun does not set into the sea in front of your ceremony. It sets behind the resort, over the mangrove and the golf course. In the last half hour the beach falls into soft, even light with a deep blue sea behind you, which is far more flattering on skin than shooting into a low sun. If you want the sun itself in the frame, we walk inland to the golf course edge for the final minutes.
The morning holds the detail most couples never hear about. From this beach, Isla Mujeres fills the horizon between roughly due east and east-southeast, and from roughly October through February the sun comes up from behind the island. A sunrise session the day after the wedding, with the island's silhouette and the first light on calm water, is one of the most distinctive frames on this coast, and the beach is empty at that hour.
A Sample Timeline That Respects the Light
Here is how we would build a March wedding with a beach ceremony, where sunset falls at 6:57 pm. Every time below moves with your date, and we rebuild it around your sunset before anything is booked.
| Time | Moment |
|---|---|
| 2:30 pm | Details, dress and getting ready in the suite |
| 4:15 pm | First look in shade, away from the main pool |
| 5:15 pm | Ceremony on the beach |
| 5:45 pm | Cocktail hour; family formals near the gazebo |
| 6:15 pm | Couple portraits along the water as golden light begins |
| 6:57 pm | Sunset behind the resort; walk inland for the sun frames |
| 7:10 pm | Four minute blue hour step-out, then dinner |
The step-out is the frame couples end up printing. Ten to fifteen minutes after sunset the sky over the channel turns a saturated blue, and two or three portraits lit with a soft warm flash against it take less time than a toast. Ask your coordinator to leave that gap between the entrance and the first course.
Bringing Your Own Photographer
Like most adults-only all-inclusive resorts on this coast, Secrets charges outside photographers for access to the property. It may arrive as a vendor fee or as a per-person day pass, and the figure is revised by season and wedding package, which is why we do not print a number here. The question almost nobody asks, and the one that can change the total by hundreds of dollars, is whether the charge is per vendor or per person: a photographer and a second shooter are one studio and two people.
We compare how the five big resorts on this shore structure the charge in our Playa Mujeres vendor fee guide, and we explain the general rules in whether resorts allow outside photographers. Whatever the amount, get it in writing before you sign the wedding package, while it can still be negotiated. We send the insurance and ID paperwork to your coordinator ourselves.
Playa Mujeres Through Our Lens

The Golf Course and Mangrove Portraits
The 18-hole course designed by Greg Norman wraps the resort on the land side, and it is the reason this property photographs well even on a windy or seaweed day. Fairway edges, water hazards and the mangrove line give you green, sheltered backgrounds that look nothing like the beach, and at sunset this is where the sun actually goes down over water and grass. Course areas are working space for golfers, so we always clear the location and the time with the resort first, usually for a short block after play has finished.
This is also our answer to sargassum. Seaweed season on the Mexican Caribbean usually runs from spring into late summer and changes week to week with the wind. The coast here, sheltered behind Isla Mujeres, tends to fare better than the open Riviera Maya, but no beach is guaranteed. Our sargassum backup plan explains how we keep a portrait block alive when the shoreline is not cooperating.
What Our Wedding Coverage Costs
IVAE Studios publishes its prices, so you can budget the fee and the photography together. Wedding coverage runs from 1,800 to 2,800 USD for a half day of up to four hours, which suits a ceremony, portraits and the first part of the reception. A full day of eight to ten hours with a second photographer is 3,500 to 5,500 USD, and adding a wedding film takes it to 5,500 to 8,000 USD. Every gallery is edited and delivered in a private 4K gallery within one to three business days.
