A Photographer's Guide to Mondrian Cancún: Lagoon Sunsets, the Beach Club and the Tower

Most resorts in the Cancún Hotel Zone face the sunrise: their beaches look east to the open Caribbean, and at sunset the sun drops behind the buildings. Mondrian Cancún is different. Its tower stands on the lagoon side of Grand Island, so the sun goes down over the water, and its beach club sits on one of the widest beaches of the coast. Here is how we would plan a session or a celebration there.

Mondrian is a brand of Ennismore, the lifestyle joint venture majority-owned by Accor. Alongside the hotel, the project includes 328 residences overlooking the lagoon, the brand's first in Mexico.

Two Coasts in One Session

The Cancún Hotel Zone is a long, thin strip of land with the Caribbean on one side and the Nichupté Lagoon on the other. Almost every resort sits on the sea side, which is why most Hotel Zone sunsets happen behind the hotels. Mondrian's tower and pools look over the lagoon instead, to the west, where the sun sets over open water: toward the west-southwest in December and the west-northwest in June.

That gives a session two completely different looks. We start at the beach club in the afternoon, when the light from the west falls on the sea and turns it turquoise behind you, then take the shuttle back for the golden minutes over the lagoon. For both, plan 75 to 90 minutes.

The Beach Club on Playa Delfines

Mondrian's beach is the Bungalow Beach Club on Playa Delfines, a few minutes away by complimentary shuttle, where guests have preferred access. Playa Delfines is one of the widest open-sea beaches of the Hotel Zone, with long, uninterrupted sand and the colorful Cancún letters at its lookout. The surf there is stronger than on the calm northern beaches, so we work at the waterline rather than in the water.

Like every beach in Mexico, Playa Delfines is public, so a session on the open sand does not depend on the beach club's rules. Inside the club area, we follow its policies.

The Lagoon and the Tower

Two of the resort's three pools face the Nichupté Lagoon, with mangroves and calm water behind them, and the third, The Observatory, is an adults-only rooftop pool with views across Cancún. For photos, the lagoon side works best in the last half hour before sunset, when the water reflects the sky and the tower's terraces catch the warm light. Access to rooftop areas reserved for particular guests is the resort's decision, so we confirm what is open to your session before the day.

When to Shoot

Times for Grand Island on the 15th of each month in 2027. Quintana Roo does not use daylight saving.

For the two-coast plan, meet at the beach club about 90 minutes before sunset and leave for the lagoon about 30 minutes before. If you only want the lagoon, 45 to 60 minutes is enough. Our December guide explains the winter light in detail.

Weddings and Celebrations

Mondrian Cancún describes flexible event spaces, with meeting rooms to follow, and offers bespoke celebrations as a premium add-on. Because the resort is new, its wedding offer is still taking shape: ask the events team in writing which spaces are available on your date, the capacity of each and the policy for outside vendors. Access for Guests

Staying at Mondrian? The photographer comes in as your invited guest: give the front desk our name and the session time a day ahead and we meet you in the lobby. For a private session, staying guests are seldom charged the outside vendor fees used for weddings, but we confirm the current policy with the resort in writing.
