December in Cancún is warm and bright: average highs of 29°C (84°F), lows of 21°C (70°F) and a sea of about 27°C (81°F). A few cold fronts, called nortes, bring a windy day or two with choppy water, and sargassum is usually minimal. Sunset falls between 6:04 and 6:16 pm, so a one-hour session starts a little after 5 pm.
Every year our inbox fills with the same three December questions: will it be warm enough for the beach, is there seaweed, and what time is sunset? Here are the honest answers, with the official climate numbers, this season's cold-front forecast and the exact light times we use to schedule our own sessions on this coast.

Temperatures and rain are the official 1991 to 2020 normals of Mexico's national weather service (SMN) for the Cancún station. Sea temperature is the typical December reading for this coast, and the light times are calculated for the Hotel Zone beach.
Warm Days, Cool Evenings and the Nortes
December days feel like a good summer day up north: highs around 29°C (84°F), bright sun and much less humidity than the summer months. The evenings are the surprise. Lows average 21°C (70°F), and with a breeze off the water that can feel cool, especially with wet hair after a swim. Nobody needs a coat, but almost everyone is glad to have a light layer after sunset.
The other thing visitors do not expect is the norte. From November to February, cold fronts sweep down from the Gulf of Mexico. When one reaches the Caribbean coast it brings strong wind from the north, low clouds, a passing shower and rough water. Beaches can fly a red flag and small boats may be kept in port. Then the front moves on and the air is often the clearest of the year. Most of December's 97 mm of average rain arrives this way, in short bursts rather than gray weeks.
For the 2026 to 2027 season, the SMN forecasts 56 cold fronts across Mexico, above the 1991 to 2020 average of 50, with nine expected in December. Not every front reaches Cancún, and in our experience the windy part on the coast rarely lasts more than two days.
We watch the forecast from 72 hours out and keep a backup evening in every December booking. On a windy day we move to the side of the coast that is sheltered from the wind instead of cancelling. A light breeze is flattering: it lifts hair and fabric. Blowing sand is not, so we never fight it.
Sargassum in December
December is normally one of the cleanest months on this coast. Esteban Amaro Mauricio, the hydrobiologist who directs the Quintana Roo Sargassum Monitoring Network, expects conditions to be minimal in November and December, while warning that the seaweed could return as early as January 2027, as it did in January 2026. In mid-October 2026, Mexico's Navy rated the state's sargassum as very low.
If a stray patch does arrive, the calm beaches that face Isla Mujeres, such as Playa Mujeres and Costa Mujeres, are usually the last to be affected. Our sargassum season guide explains the full year, and the beach-by-beach forecast shows which shores stay clear.
Sunrise, Golden Hour and Sunset
December has the shortest days of the year, but sunset is later than most visitors expect: just after 6 pm, not 5 pm. Quintana Roo stays on the same clock all year, with no daylight saving, which keeps the evenings long. These are the times for the Hotel Zone beach:
| Date | Sunrise | Golden light | Sunset | Last light |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dec 1 | 7:08 am | 5:32 pm | 6:04 pm | 6:28 pm |
| Dec 8 | 7:12 am | 5:33 pm | 6:06 pm | 6:30 pm |
| Dec 15 | 7:17 am | 5:35 pm | 6:08 pm | 6:32 pm |
| Dec 21 | 7:20 am | 5:38 pm | 6:11 pm | 6:35 pm |
| Dec 31 | 7:24 am | 5:44 pm | 6:16 pm | 6:40 pm |
"Golden light" is when the sun drops below six degrees and the color turns warm; "last light" is the end of civil twilight, when the sky still glows. For a one-hour session we start about an hour before sunset, so a little after 5 pm early in the month and closer to 5:15 pm by New Year's Eve. Sunrise is late enough that a morning session does not mean a 5 am alarm, and the sun comes up in the southeast, over the sea, from the Hotel Zone. Our comparison of sunrise and sunset sessions explains the trade-offs.

Crowds and When to Book
The first half of December is one of the best-value stretches of the year. The dry season has started, the resorts are calmer and the beaches are quiet in the late afternoon. From around the third week of the month, school holidays in the United States, Canada and Mexico fill the hotels, and the last ten days through New Year's week are the busiest of the whole year.
For photos, everyone wants the same hour: the one before sunset. If you are traveling in the last ten days of December, book the session when you book your flights, because those sunset slots are the first to go. Many resorts also host large evening events at the end of the month, so ask yours early about access for outside vendors on the night you want. Our guide to bringing an outside photographer to a resort covers the usual rules.
What to Wear in December
Days are warm enough for linen, slip dresses and bare shoulders. For a sunset session, plan for the breeze: fabrics with some weight move beautifully, while very short, light skirts fight the wind. Bring a light knit or a linen shirt for after the session, when the temperature drops toward 21°C.
December light is clear and slightly cooler in tone than summer light, so whites, sand, soft blues and sage look fresh against the water. Our guides to family outfits, couples outfits and coordinating outfits by age have full palettes.
How People Use a December Session
Family trips over school break. December is when three generations finally share one vacation. We schedule the session early in the trip, before sunburns and late nights, and keep it short for small children. See our family photography in Cancún page and our tips for photos with toddlers.
Proposals. The clear air after a norte makes for some of the most beautiful sunsets of the year. If you are planning to ask on the last night of the year, read our guide to a New Year's Eve proposal in Cancún.
Engagement photos. Couples fly south to escape the snow and come home with save-the-date photos. Our winter engagement guide covers December to March.
A sunrise on Isla Mujeres. With sunrise after 7 am, the island's eastern edge is an easy early start and nearly empty. See our Isla Mujeres sunrise spots.
