Cancún in November and Thanksgiving Week: Weather, Crowds and the Best Light

November is the month we recommend most often and explain least. It is warm enough to swim every day, the summer seaweed has usually gone and the resorts are calmer than they will be a month later. It also has two rushes that catch people off guard: a Mexican long weekend in the middle of the month and US Thanksgiving week at the end. Here is November as we plan it, with the official numbers.

Temperatures and rain are the official 1991 to 2020 normals of Mexico's national weather service (SMN) for the Cancún station. Sea temperature is the typical November reading for this coast, and the light times are calculated for the Hotel Zone beach.

Warm, a Little Wet, and the Last of the Storm Season

November still feels like summer at midday, with highs around 30°C (86°F), but the humidity starts to fall and the evenings cool to about 22°C (72°F). It is also wetter than many guides admit: the SMN normal for November is 131 mm of rain, more than December's 97 mm. Most of it comes as short showers and the first cold fronts of the season, the nortes, which bring a windy day with choppy water and then clear, bright air. For the 2026 to 2027 season the SMN forecasts eight cold fronts across Mexico in November.

The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs until November 30. Storms this late in the year are uncommon on this coast, but not impossible, so travel insurance is still sensible for early-November trips. Our weather and hurricane guide explains how we plan around it.

Sargassum in November

By November the summer seaweed has normally faded. Esteban Amaro Mauricio, the hydrobiologist who directs the Quintana Roo Sargassum Monitoring Network, expects conditions to be minimal in November and December, and in mid-October 2026 Mexico's Navy rated the state's sargassum as very low. The November Calendar: Two Rushes

Early November. The first two days of the month are Día de Muertos, a family holiday in Mexico. It brings altars and candlelit cemeteries to the towns more than crowds to the beaches.

November 14 to 16, 2026. Mexico's Revolution Day is observed on Monday, November 16, which makes a long weekend. Hotels fill with travelers from across Mexico, and the Hotel Zone beaches are busier than the weeks around it.

November 21 to 29, 2026. US Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26, and the week around it is the first big rush of the winter season. Flights and family resorts fill early.

Outside those dates, November is one of the calmest and best-value months of the year. If you can choose, the first and second weeks are ideal.

Thanksgiving Week Photos

Thanksgiving week is when we photograph the biggest families of the year: grandparents, cousins and new partners, all on one beach for once. A few things make that session easy:

• Do it early in the week. Monday to Wednesday, before the big dinner and before anyone is sunburned. If Thursday is the only option, the session ends at sunset, 6:04 pm, so dinner at 7:30 pm still works.
• Agree on one palette. With 15 or 20 people, two or three shared colors matter more than matching. Our guide to coordinating outfits by age and the one on what grandparents should wear help.
• Plan the groups. Send us the list of family units before the trip. We photograph the whole group first, while everyone is fresh, then each household, then the small portraits.
• Choose the time for the youngest. Toddlers do better at sunrise, which is just after 7 am in late November. Our tips for photos with toddlers explain why.

Sunrise, Golden Hour and Sunset

November is when the evenings shorten fastest, and the last week of the month holds the earliest sunset of the whole year. Quintana Roo does not use daylight saving, so nothing jumps an hour. These are the times for the Hotel Zone beach:

"Golden light" is when the sun drops below six degrees and the color warms; "last light" is the end of civil twilight. A one-hour session starts about 5 pm. For a big family, we often start at 4:45 pm so the group photos are done before the light turns golden and the portraits get the best of it.

November or December?

November is a touch warmer and the sea is at its last summer temperature; December is drier, with clearer air after each front. Both have very little sargassum.
