From December to March, Cancún has average highs of 29 to 32°C (84 to 90°F), the least humidity of the year and golden light that starts between 5:35 and 6:27 pm. A winter session 10 to 14 months before the wedding gives you photos in time for save-the-dates. Sessions start at 245 USD, and the gallery arrives in one to three business days.
Back home, winter engagement photos mean gloves, a scarf and twenty minutes before your hands go numb. Google Trends lists "winter engagement photos" among the fastest-rising engagement searches in the United States this fall, up 170 percent, and more couples are solving the cold the simple way: a long weekend in the sun. Here is how we plan a winter engagement session on this coast, from the weather to the save-the-date deadline.
Why Winter Is a Great Season Here
Winter is the dry season on the Mexican Caribbean. The humidity drops, the air is clear after each cold front and the water turns the bright turquoise people imagine. For photos, that means comfortable skin, hair that behaves and colors that look true. It is also a beautiful contrast for your save-the-dates: a warm beach photo in an envelope that arrives in January.
And it is short to get here. Cancún's airport has nonstop flights from most large US and Canadian cities, so a three-night trip can easily hold an engagement session, a couple of beach days and a celebration dinner. Our guide to a destination engagement trip has ideas for building the weekend.
December to March, Month by Month
| Month | Average high | Average low | Average rain |
|---|---|---|---|
| December | 29°C / 84°F | 21°C / 70°F | 97 mm |
| January | 29°C / 84°F | 20°C / 68°F | 104 mm |
| February | 30°C / 86°F | 21°C / 70°F | 59 mm |
| March | 32°C / 90°F | 21°C / 70°F | 39 mm |
These are the official 1991 to 2020 normals of Mexico's national weather service (SMN) for Cancún. December and January bring most of the season's cold fronts, the nortes: a windy day or two with clouds and rough water, then clear skies. For the 2026 to 2027 season the SMN forecasts nine fronts across Mexico in December, eight in January, seven in February and six in March. February and March are drier and warmer, but March is also spring break, and Holy Week 2027 runs from March 21 to 28, the busiest week on the beaches.
For the calmest beaches and steady weather, aim for the first half of December, the second half of January or February. We always keep a backup day in case a norte arrives.
When the Light Is Best
Times for the Hotel Zone beach on the 15th of each month. Quintana Roo does not use daylight saving.
| Date | Sunrise | Golden light | Sunset |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dec 15 | 7:17 am | 5:35 pm | 6:08 pm |
| Jan 15 | 7:27 am | 5:54 pm | 6:26 pm |
| Feb 15 | 7:17 am | 6:15 pm | 6:45 pm |
| Mar 15 | 6:56 am | 6:27 pm | 6:56 pm |
We start most engagement sessions about an hour before sunset and finish as the sky glows. In winter, sunrise is late enough that a morning session is an easy option too, and the beaches are empty. Our comparison of sunrise and sunset sessions helps you choose.

When to Take Engagement Photos
"When do you take engagement photos" is one of the fastest-growing engagement questions on Google this season. The honest answer depends on what the photos are for.
- For save-the-dates: a destination wedding sends them 10 to 12 months ahead, as we explain in our save-the-date guide. So the session should be 10 to 14 months before the wedding. A winter session this year is perfect for a wedding in late 2027.
- For the wedding website and welcome bags: any time up to three or four months before the wedding.
- As a scouting trip: if you are getting married in Cancún or the Riviera Maya, a winter session lets you see your resort, meet your photographer and test the light before the big day.
Because our galleries arrive in one to three business days, even a trip in January leaves plenty of time to design and print.
Where to Shoot
The Hotel Zone beaches give the classic look: white sand and turquoise water, with soft dunes and palms. Isla Mujeres adds colorful streets and a quiet sunrise on its eastern edge. Playa del Carmen mixes beach and town for a more urban, editorial feel. And a cenote gives an unforgettable frame of stone, roots and clear water; see what to expect in our cenote couples photoshoot guide.
If you are already engaged and planning the proposal story too, our guide to a proposal followed by an engagement shoot shows how to fit both into one trip.
What to Wear
Winter here lets you dress up without overheating. Long dresses, tailored linen suits and light knits all work, and evenings around 20 to 21°C mean a second, warmer look is comfortable after sunset. Bring two outfits: one light and flowing for the beach, one more formal or more "you" for the second half. Fabrics with some weight look best in the breeze. Our couples outfit guide has palettes that photograph well against the sea.
