On December 31 in Cancún the golden light starts at 5:44 pm and the sun sets at 6:16 pm, which makes a sunset proposal the most beautiful option for photos. A midnight proposal with fireworks is possible but harder to photograph and depends on the resort's schedule. The first sunrise of 2027 comes at 7:24 am. Keep January 1 or December 30 as a backup in case a cold front arrives. Proposal photography starts at 245 USD.
Asking on the last night of the year feels right to many people: the trip, the people you love nearby and a date you will never forget. It is also the busiest night of the year at every resort on this coast. Here are the three moments we have photographed on New Year's Eve, what each one really looks like on camera, and how to plan the one you choose.
Three Moments to Choose From
- Sunset, Dec 31Light from 5:44 pm, sunset 6:16 pm. The best photos: warm light and faces you can see. Easy to keep secret, then dinner and the party.
- MidnightAround 12:00 am, with the fireworks. The hardest to photograph: dark, crowded, flash needed. Already in the party.
- Sunrise, Jan 1About 7:24 am. Soft light and empty beaches, but you need a reason to wake up early. Breakfast for two after.
Times are for the Cancún Hotel Zone beach. Quintana Roo stays on the same clock all year, so there is no daylight saving change to plan around.
At Sunset on December 31
This is the one we recommend. On the last day of the year the warm golden light begins at about 5:44 pm, the sun sets at 6:16 pm and the sky keeps glowing until about 6:40 pm. If you propose around 5:50 pm, the moment happens in the best light of the day, and there are still 30 to 40 minutes for portraits before it gets dark. Then you walk into dinner already engaged, with the whole night ahead to celebrate.
The sun sets over the land, not the sea, on the Caribbean side, so on east-facing beaches the light falls on your faces with a turquoise sea behind you, which is exactly what you want in a proposal photo. On the calm beaches that face Isla Mujeres, the water is flatter and the background quieter. Our list of the best proposal spots in Cancún and the Riviera Maya compares them.

At Midnight, With Fireworks
It sounds like a film, and the moment itself can be wonderful. On camera it is much harder. At midnight the beach is dark, the resort's party is crowded and loud, and the fireworks are set off on the resort's schedule, which can start a few minutes early or late. We can photograph it with flash and a planned spot that puts the fireworks behind you, but the frames are darker and less detailed than a sunset proposal, and the moon will not help: on December 31, 2026 it is a half moon that only rises around midnight.
If midnight matters to you, the best plan is both: a sunset session with the proposal, and a short appearance at midnight for a few frames of the two of you under the fireworks, already engaged. If you want the surprise at midnight, confirm with your resort where and when the fireworks will be and whether an outside photographer can be at the event.
At the First Sunrise of the Year
On January 1 the sun rises at about 7:24 am, out of the sea to the southeast of the Hotel Zone. The beach is empty, the light is soft and the quiet is a contrast to the night before. The challenge is the surprise: you need a believable reason to be on the beach at 7 am after New Year's Eve. A sunrise walk planned days ahead, or a pre-booked photoshoot that is "just for the trip", works well.
If you can get to Isla Mujeres, its eastern edge is one of the most beautiful sunrise spots on this coast. See our guide to Isla Mujeres sunrise spots.
A Backup Plan for a Norte
December is cold-front season. Mexico's national weather service (SMN) forecasts nine cold fronts across the country in December 2026, and when one reaches Cancún it brings a windy day or two with rough water and clouds. That does not mean a storm, but it can mean a red flag on the beach and a gray sky at sunset.
So we plan every New Year's Eve proposal with a backup: December 30 at sunset or January 1 at sunrise. You decide on the morning of the 31st, after we check the forecast together. Our guide to Cancún in December has the full climate picture.
Resort, Surprise and Ring
- Talk to your resort early. On December 31 most resorts run a gala dinner and a party, and some have special rules for outside vendors that night. Ask in writing when you book. Our guide to bringing an outside photographer to a resort explains the usual policies.
- Book the dinner after the light. A table at 7:30 pm leaves time for the proposal, the portraits and a change of clothes.
- Keep the ring safe. On sand, a dropped ring disappears in a second. Keep it in a zipped pocket until the moment, and hold the box with both hands.
- Let us hide. We arrive before you, look like any other guest with a camera and only step forward after the yes. Our surprise proposal photography page shows how it works.
