IVAE Studios photographs families, couples, proposals and small weddings on Isla Holbox, the car-free island on the edge of the Yum Balam reserve. The session that defines Holbox is the last hour of light at Punta Cocos, where the sun sets over open water, and the shallow sandbars give a look no other beach on this coast has. Sessions start at 245 USD plus travel, the gallery arrives in one to three business days, and November through April is the most reliable season.
Holbox photographs unlike anywhere else in the Mexican Caribbean. The water is so shallow that you can walk far out on the sand, the island faces north toward the Gulf, so the sun sets over the sea at its western tip, and there are no cars, no towers and no crowds in the frame. It also takes planning: a two-hour drive, a ferry, and a golf cart on sand streets. This is how we photograph the island, and how to book it.

Holbox is a narrow island off the northern tip of Quintana Roo, inside the protected Yum Balam area. It is about 40 kilometers long and only a short strip of it is a village; the rest is beach, mangrove and lagoon. That is exactly why people come, and it shapes how we photograph it.
What We Photograph on Holbox
Families. Children can run across the flats in ankle-deep water, which makes for the most natural family pictures on this coast. Our Holbox family session guide covers the logistics with kids in detail.
Couples and honeymoons. Holbox is quiet, so a couples session here feels private in a way the resort beaches rarely do. Barefoot on the sandbar at golden hour is the classic frame.
Proposals. A sunset proposal at Punta Cocos is one of the most requested moments we plan. See our guide to proposing on Holbox.
Elopements and small weddings. The island suits weddings of a few people up to a small group staying in its boutique hotels. Our Holbox wedding and elopement guide explains what is possible.
Where We Shoot
Punta Cocos. The western tip of the island, a short golf cart ride from the village. Because Holbox faces north, this is where the sun sets over the water, and it is where most of our sessions end.
The sandbars. At low tide, long sandbars open up along the shore and the water around them stays shallow and calm. They give the reflective, almost white look that people associate with Holbox. We check the tide for your date.
Toward Punta Mosquito. East of the village, the beach runs toward Punta Mosquito, where flamingos and shorebirds feed in the lagoon. It is a protected area: we photograph from the sand, keep our distance from the birds and follow the current access rules, which have tightened at times.
The village. Sand streets, painted walls and golf carts. A few frames in town before the beach make the gallery feel like the trip, not just the sunset. Our full list is in the best photo spots on Holbox.
Sunset Times on Holbox
Times for Punta Cocos on the 15th of each month in 2027. Quintana Roo does not use daylight saving, so these hold all year.
| Month | Sunrise | Golden | Sunset |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 7:30 am | 5:56 pm | 6:28 pm |
| March | 6:58 am | 6:30 pm | 6:59 pm |
| May | 6:11 am | 6:50 pm | 7:21 pm |
| June | 6:07 am | 7:01 pm | 7:33 pm |
| July | 6:16 am | 7:03 pm | 7:35 pm |
| September | 6:37 am | 6:23 pm | 6:53 pm |
| November | 7:01 am | 5:36 pm | 6:07 pm |
| December | 7:20 am | 5:37 pm | 6:10 pm |
We start most sessions about 60 to 75 minutes before sunset, with group or family frames while everyone is fresh, and save the last half hour for the water and the sky. In winter that means meeting around 5 pm; in June and July, a little after 6 pm.
Best Months, and the Ones to Avoid
November through April is the most dependable stretch: drier, cooler, calmer water and fewer mosquitoes. It is when we recommend Holbox without reservations.
Mid May to mid September is whale shark season, the island's busiest time, with heat and humidity. If you come for the whale sharks, we schedule the session on a day without a boat trip, so nobody is exhausted at golden hour.
September and October are the wettest months and the ones we would talk you out of for photographs. Holbox sits on the Gulf side of the peninsula and largely escapes sargassum, which is a real advantage in spring and summer.
How a Holbox Session Works
Every trip to Holbox goes through Chiquilá, a village two to two and a half hours by road from Cancún, and then a ferry across the lagoon. We travel to the island for your session, and we strongly recommend that you stay at least one night: a sunset session as a day trip means the last ferry and a long drive back in the dark.
Here is the usual plan. You tell us your dates and where you are staying. We check the sunset and the tide for those days and suggest the best one, usually your second day on the island, once you have settled in. We meet you at your hotel or at the start of the beach, walk or ride to the first spot, and finish at Punta Cocos as the sun goes down. Your private gallery arrives within one to three business days.

Island Sessions, Through Our Lens
Real IVAE Studios sessions on Isla Mujeres, the other island we photograph most: the same shallow Caribbean water, the same white sand and the same golden-hour approach we bring to Holbox.

Collections, Prices and Travel
Holbox sessions use the same collections as the rest of the coast. Travel to the island (road, ferry and, for sunset sessions, a night on Holbox) is quoted with your date.
