The four places that make a Holbox gallery are Punta Cocos at sunset, the sandbars at low tide, the beach toward Punta Mosquito and the sand streets of the village. Shoot the village and the beach in the late afternoon, and finish at Punta Cocos, where the sun sets over open water. November through April gives the calmest, clearest days.
Holbox is small, but its best light is spread across the island, and it moves through the day. This is the order in which we photograph it, with the timing that makes each place work.
The Village Streets
Sand streets, low colorful buildings, murals and golf carts parked under the palms. The village photographs best in the late afternoon, when the sun is low enough to light the walls without harsh shadows, and it is the right place for the first 10 minutes of a session, while everyone warms up. Keep to the side of the street: golf carts and tricycle taxis are the island's traffic.
The Main Beach and the Sandbars
The beach in front of the village is wide, with hammocks and swings at many of the beach bars and hotels. At low tide, sandbars appear just offshore, surrounded by shallow, calm water; walking out on them gives the open, reflective look that is unique to Holbox. Tides change the scene from day to day, so we check them for your dates and plan the sandbar for the best evening.

Toward Punta Mosquito
East of the village the beach runs toward Punta Mosquito, the wilder end of the island, where flamingos and shorebirds feed in the lagoon. It is part of the Yum Balam protected area. We photograph from the sand, keep a wide distance from the birds, and follow the current access rules, which have limited how far you can walk at times. Early morning is quieter here than the sunset end of the island.
Punta Cocos at Sunset
The western tip of the island and the one place every Holbox gallery should end. Because the island faces north, this is where the sun drops into open water, and the shallow beach turns gold and then pink. It is about 2.5 kilometers from the center, a short golf cart ride. Arrive 45 minutes before sunset for the best spot on the sand.

A session that covers the village, the beach and Punta Cocos needs about 75 to 90 minutes, starting roughly an hour and a half before sunset.
Practical Tips
- Wear light colors. White, sand, pale blue and soft pastels look best against Holbox's pale water. Our beach outfit guide has examples.
- Plan for mosquitoes. They come out at dusk, especially after rain. Repellent before the session, not during it.
- Mind the wind. Afternoon breezes are common in winter. Hair ties and fabrics with some weight help.
- No drones over the reserve without the required permission.
