The proposal we plan most on Holbox is at Punta Cocos in the last 30 minutes before sunset, when the sun goes down over open water at the island's western tip. The photographer arrives early and works as a stranger on the beach, you walk out on the sand, and the session continues as your first engagement portraits. Proposal coverage uses our collections from 245 USD plus travel to the island.
Holbox is one of the easiest places in Mexico to keep a secret. There are no cars, no crowds at sunset on most evenings, and every couple on the island ends the day walking toward the same point on the sand. That is the whole plan: be where everyone goes, a little before everyone else, with the right person already waiting with a camera.
Where to Propose on Holbox
Punta Cocos is our first choice. It is the western tip of the island, the sun sets over the water in front of you, and the beach is wide enough for us to stay out of sight until the moment. It is also a natural place for a couple to walk to at the end of the day, so the plan never feels staged.
The sandbar at low tide is the second. Walking out on the sand with water on both sides makes a striking frame, but it depends on the tide for your date, so we treat it as an option we confirm in the week.
Your hotel's beach or pier. Several small hotels on Holbox have their own stretch of sand, hammocks or a dock. If you want something more private, we can set it up there, with the hotel's permission.
What Time
Sunset on Holbox moves between about 6:07 pm in November and 7:35 pm in July, and Quintana Roo does not change its clocks. We place the question about 25 to 30 minutes before sunset, so that the moment is in warm light and there is still time for portraits as the sky turns.
| Month | Sunrise | Golden | Sunset |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 7:30 am | 5:56 pm | 6:28 pm |
| March | 6:58 am | 6:30 pm | 6:59 pm |
| May | 6:11 am | 6:50 pm | 7:21 pm |
| June | 6:07 am | 7:01 pm | 7:33 pm |
| July | 6:16 am | 7:03 pm | 7:35 pm |
| September | 6:37 am | 6:23 pm | 6:53 pm |
| November | 7:01 am | 5:36 pm | 6:07 pm |
| December | 7:20 am | 5:37 pm | 6:10 pm |
Keeping It a Surprise
We arrive at the spot about 30 minutes before you and work like any other visitor with a camera. You send us a photo of what you will be wearing, and we agree on a simple signal, usually the moment you stop and turn to face the water. We photograph the walk in, the question and the reaction from a distance with a long lens, then come over to introduce ourselves.
The two things that ruin surprises on Holbox are the same as anywhere: arriving late and telling too many people. Give yourself margin on the golf cart, and keep the plan between you and us. Our guide to planning a surprise proposal from abroad has the full checklist.
The Ferry, the Golf Cart and the Ring
Plan the proposal for your second evening on the island, not the day you arrive. The road to Chiquilá and the ferry take most of a morning, and a delay on the first day leaves no margin. Golf carts are the only transport; book one, or ask your hotel to arrange it, for the time we suggest.
Carry the ring in a zipped pocket rather than a box in your hand. Sand and shallow water are beautiful for photos and unforgiving for small objects.
After the Yes
The proposal takes seconds; what most couples remember is the half hour after. Once you have had a moment together, we keep photographing as the sky changes: portraits on the sand, the ring, a few frames walking back as the light fades. That way the gallery is both the surprise and your first engagement session.

What It Costs
Proposals use our regular collections. Travel to Holbox is quoted with your date.
