Banyan Tree is the all-villa privacy choice with private-pool getting-ready light; Andaz offers the most flexible reception spaces on the Mayakoba estate. The canal-boat portrait works in the first forty minutes after sunrise or the last hour before sunset, and every hotel-to-hotel move costs ten to twenty minutes that belong in the timeline.
Mayakoba is not a hotel, it is an estate. Man-made canals cut through mangrove connect four separate luxury hotels, a golf course and several kilometres of beach just north of Playa del Carmen, and a wedding here can use more of that estate than most couples realise. We already write a lot about Rosewood and Fairmont. This guide fills the gap on the other two: Banyan Tree Mayakoba, the all-villa property built around privacy, and Andaz Mayakoba, the brightest and most flexible of the four for actual events. Here is how each one photographs.
Mayakoba as One Estate with Four Very Different Hotels
The estate sits on the coast road roughly ten minutes north of Playa del Carmen and about fifty minutes from Cancun International. Four hotels share it: Rosewood Mayakoba, Banyan Tree Mayakoba, Fairmont Mayakoba and Andaz Mayakoba. They share the canals, the mangrove, the golf course and the shoreline, and they differ enormously in character, price and what they can hold.
This matters for photography in a way brochures never explain. A wedding at Mayakoba is not confined to one hotel's grounds. With the right permissions you can get ready in a villa at one property, take boat portraits on the shared canals, and hold the reception in the event space of another. That flexibility is the estate's real advantage, and it comes with logistics, which is the subject of a later section.
Banyan Tree Villas: Private Pools and Getting-Ready Light
Banyan Tree is an all-villa property. Every accommodation has its own walled garden and private pool, the design language is Asian rather than Mexican, and the interiors run to dark wood, water features and lanterns. It is the quietest of the four by a distance.
For a getting-ready morning that layout is close to ideal. Large glazed doors open onto the pool courtyard, and the water bounces light up into the room, producing a soft, flattering uplight you cannot get in a standard hotel room. There is space and privacy, so nobody is stepping over a makeup artist in a corridor.
Two honest caveats. The dark wood interiors absorb light, so we work close to the doors and switch off the warm lamps rather than mixing them with daylight. And the villas are spread across the property, so a five to ten minute buggy ride separates the bride's villa from the groom's, and again from the ceremony. That is fifteen or twenty minutes of your coverage spent in transit, and it needs to be in the timeline rather than discovered on the day.
Andaz: The Most Flexible Reception Spaces on the Estate
Andaz Mayakoba is the youngest of the four and reads completely differently on camera. Where Banyan Tree is dark wood and shadow, Andaz is white stucco, colour, open corridors and a central plaza. It photographs bright, graphic and contemporary.
Its practical strength is event space. Andaz carries the most flexible combination of indoor ballroom capacity and outdoor terraces on the estate, which matters for two reasons. First, it can seat a large guest list without the wedding feeling compressed. Second, it gives you a genuine indoor plan for rain, which on this coast between June and October is not a hypothetical.
It is also generally the most accessible of the four on price, which is why we often see the pattern of a Banyan Tree or Rosewood villa morning followed by an Andaz reception. If the budget forces one choice, Andaz gives you the most usable wedding-day infrastructure per peso.
Canals and Boats: The Shot That Only Exists Here
The canals are why Mayakoba is on every photographer's list. Small boats run between the hotels through channels cut into mangrove, with dark green walls on both sides and a bright ribbon of water down the middle.
The technique is specific. Because the mangrove is very dark and the water very bright, we expose for the couple and let the water carry the highlights rather than trying to hold both. The best windows are the first forty minutes after sunrise and the last hour before sunset, when light rakes along the channel instead of dropping straight into it. In the middle of the day the same canal is a contrast problem with nothing to recommend it.
Logistics, because this shot looks effortless and is not. Boats must be booked in advance with the hotel and they come with a driver. Service stops at a set hour in the evening, usually earlier than couples expect. Getting in and out of a boat in a wedding dress needs two people and flat shoes, and the dock edges are wet. Thirty minutes of scheduling buys a photograph nowhere else on this coast can give you.
Ceremony Sites and Wind on the Mayakoba Beach
The estate's beach is a narrow strip behind a dune line planted with sea grape, and it is exposed to the same easterly trade breeze as the rest of the coast, strongest from February through April. The dune breaks some of it at ground level, but beach club decks and any raised platform catch the full force.
What that means in practice is what it means everywhere on this coast. Fabric drape flaps, unweighted florals fall, candles are pointless, and lapel microphones fill with roar, which matters more for video than for stills. If your date falls in the windy months, the interior lawns and canal-side decks are measurably calmer and, as a bonus, greener and more distinctly Mayakoba in the frame than a beach that could be anywhere.
For rain, the estate is better equipped than most Riviera Maya venues, because indoor ballroom space exists on more than one property. Ask your coordinator to name the specific rain plan room, not just to confirm that one exists.
Vendor Access, Buggies and Moving Between Hotels
Mayakoba is gated, and vendors do not simply drive in. The studio registers in advance with the hosting hotel, and depending on the property that means a vehicle pass, a parking area with an internal shuttle, or a buggy assigned by the events team. Ask, before your contract is signed, whether the photographer's buggy is included or billed.
Then plan for internal distances. Crossing from one hotel to another inside the estate takes ten to twenty minutes by buggy or boat. A Banyan Tree getting-ready followed by an Andaz reception is a wonderful day and it contains at least two transfers that must appear in the timeline as blocks with times on them. Also confirm whether your guests may move freely between properties, which usually works with a wedding wristband but is never automatic.
Choosing Between the Four Mayakoba Properties
Set them side by side and the decision gets simple. Choose Rosewood for the widest visual range in a single day, beach, mangrove and jungle, at the highest price point. Choose Banyan Tree for privacy, a villa morning and the quietest atmosphere on the estate. Choose Fairmont for large guest counts and the most family infrastructure. Choose Andaz for the most flexible event spaces, the brightest and most contemporary look, and the best value of the four.
None of them is the best hotel at Mayakoba. Each is the best hotel for a particular wedding, and the estate is generous enough that you can borrow from more than one of them in the same day.
