Banyan Tree Mayakoba is a five-star resort within the Mayakoba complex on the Riviera Maya, sharing the same protected stretch of jungle and lagoon as Rosewood, Andaz, and Fairmont. The architecture is Asian-influenced — Thai-inspired pavilions, dark teak interiors, lily pools — with 130 villas distributed across the property. Light + timing at Banyan Tree Mayakoba
Banyan Tree's beach faces east, which makes sunrise the headline window — soft Caribbean light builds from roughly 6:00 to 7:15 AM with the resort still mostly empty. Sunset on the beach itself is mostly indirect; for golden-hour color we move to the lagoon-side villa pools or the wave pool deck, where the western light catches the water from approximately 6:00 to 6:45 PM depending on season.
Cenote Buho is open-roof and sits in jungle shade most of the day — the usable sunbeam window where direct light enters the water column runs roughly 11 AM to 1 PM. We schedule cenote portraits inside that window and pair them with a separate beach-or-villa session at golden hour. November through April delivers the most reliable conditions; the shoulder months can produce dramatic sky tones at minor weather risk.
