They are not two places to choose between. The Riviera Maya is the stretch of coast running south from Cancun, and Playa del Carmen is the town in the middle of it. So Playa is in the Riviera Maya, the way a city is in a region. What people are really asking is whether to stay in a walkable town with a main street, or in a resort on a private stretch of sand with nothing around it.
Why the comparison confuses everyone
If you search for the difference between the Riviera Maya and Playa del Carmen you will get a lot of confident answers, and most of them are comparing a region with a town inside it. That is why the question keeps getting asked.
Think of it the way you would think of a coastline and a city on it. The Riviera Maya is the coast. Playa del Carmen is the town. Asking which is better is a bit like asking whether you should visit the coast or the town on it.
What people mean, when you get down to it, is something much more useful: do I want to stay somewhere with a street, or somewhere with a beach and nothing else?
What the Riviera Maya actually is
The Riviera Maya is the run of Caribbean coast in the state of Quintana Roo that begins just south of Cancun and continues south for roughly a hundred and thirty kilometres, ending around Tulum. Puerto Morelos is on it. Playa del Carmen is on it. Akumal, Puerto Aventuras and the Mayakoba development are all on it.
Note what is not on it: Cancun. Cancun sits just north of where the Riviera Maya begins, which is why hotels there call themselves Cancun and not Riviera Maya, and why the airport serves both. Tulum is usually counted as the southern end, though people argue about that at the edges.
The character of the coast changes as you go south. The northern half is resort corridor: long private beaches, big all-inclusive properties, and a highway a few minutes inland with jungle on both sides. Further south it gets lower, quieter and more boutique.
What Playa del Carmen is actually like
Playa del Carmen is a real town of well over a hundred thousand people, about an hour south of Cancun airport, and it is the busiest place on the Riviera Maya.
Its centre of gravity is Quinta Avenida, Fifth Avenue, a long pedestrian street one block back from the beach, lined with restaurants, bars and shops for several kilometres. You can walk out of your hotel and be somewhere in two minutes, which is exactly what a resort on a private beach cannot offer.
The ferry to Cozumel leaves from here, which makes it a natural base if you want to dive. The beach in front of the town is public and busy. North of the centre, toward Playacar and beyond, it gets quieter and more resort-like.
The trade-off is honest in both directions. You get life, choice and the ability to leave your hotel on foot. You also get noise, vendors on the sand and a beach that belongs to everybody.
How to choose between them
Choose Playa del Carmen if you want to walk to dinner, you like having thirty restaurants rather than four, you are diving Cozumel, or the idea of eating every meal at the same resort makes you restless.
Choose a resort elsewhere on the Riviera Maya if you want a quiet stretch of sand, you are travelling with small children, you want the all-inclusive to be the whole plan, or you are getting married and need a property that can hold the whole group.
And a note on Cancun, since it is usually the third option in the same conversation: Cancun is closer to the airport, has the wider beaches and the bigger waves, and its Hotel Zone faces east, which changes the light entirely. The Riviera Maya coast faces roughly the same way, so the same rule about hours applies down the whole coast.
How each one photographs

A resort stretch on the Riviera Maya gives you empty sand. At sunrise you will often have several hundred metres of beach to yourselves, with palms and nothing else in frame. That is the cleanest, quietest kind of session there is, and it is why so much of what you see from this coast is made on those beaches.
A session in Playa del Carmen is a different genre. The town itself is the backdrop: the pedestrian street, the doorways, the light between buildings early in the morning. It photographs like a place people live in, not like a postcard. For couples who want something with texture rather than sand and horizon, it is the better choice, and it has to be done early, before Quinta Avenida wakes up.
The one thing both share is the hour. This whole coast faces east, so the sun rises out of the water in front of you and sets behind you, inland. Sunrise or the last ninety minutes of afternoon. Never noon.
