Tulum Felipe Carrillo Puerto International, code TQO, opened in December 2023 about 25 kilometres southwest of Tulum town, inland, near the community of Chunyaxché. It is new, calm, quick to clear, and genuinely pleasant to arrive into. It also runs a much thinner schedule. A handful of US carriers serve it seasonally alongside Mexican domestic routes, and those routes have been added and pulled repeatedly since opening.
That volatility is the honest headline for 2026. Tulum passed the one million passenger mark, which is a real achievement for a two year old airport, but monthly traffic through this year has fallen sharply against its earlier peaks while Cancún has held. Anything specific we write about which airline flies where would be stale by the time you read it, so treat route lists as something to re-check the month you book, not something to trust from a blog post.

Cost Differences: Transfers, Tolls and Private Versus Shared
Private van transfers from CUN to the Hotel Zone or Playa Mujeres generally run in the region of 70 to 120 US dollars each way for a vehicle rather than per person, and to Playa del Carmen or Mayakoba roughly 90 to 150. From TQO into Tulum, expect a similar band for a much shorter drive, because the airport is new, the operator pool is small and prices have not been competed down.
Shared shuttles cost a fraction of that and take considerably longer, since they stop at several resorts. The ADO bus is the genuinely cheap option and it is safe, comfortable and reliable, running from both airports to the main towns, though it drops you at a bus station rather than your resort door.
Tolls matter on the southern legs. The 305D between Playa del Carmen and Tulum carries a toll, and drivers price it into a private quote but not always into a rental car budget. If guests are renting, tell them to carry pesos in cash for tolls.

What the 2026 Route Shifts Mean for Your Guests
Three practical consequences follow from Tulum's thinner, more volatile schedule.
First, fewer daily flights means less recovery room. On a route with one flight a day, a cancellation is a lost day, and on a wedding weekend a lost day can mean missing the rehearsal dinner or the ceremony itself. CUN's frequency is a form of insurance your guests do not know they are buying.
Second, seasonality bites harder at TQO. Several routes are seasonal, so a flight that exists in February may not exist in September, and a guest researching in one month and booking in another can find the option gone.
Third, price behaves differently. TQO fares are sometimes lower because carriers are stimulating a new route, and sometimes markedly higher because there is no competition on the pair. CUN pricing is more consistently competitive simply because so many airlines fight over it. Tell guests to price both and warn them the answer is not stable.

Our timelines are built around golden hour, roughly the last forty minutes before sunset, and in Cancún that lands between about 6:07 PM in mid November and about 7:33 PM in mid July. Anyone who is still in a van at that hour is not in your photographs.
So the rule we give couples is simple. Nobody who is in the wedding party should arrive on the wedding day, and ideally not on the rehearsal day either. A guest landing at CUN at 2 PM for a 5 PM ceremony in the Hotel Zone can technically make it, and will arrive stressed, unshowered and visibly so on camera. The same guest landing at TQO for a Tulum wedding has a shorter drive and a little more room, which is a genuine argument for TQO if your venue is south.
The wider point holds either way: build a full buffer day. It protects the ceremony, it protects the getting ready coverage, and it means the first frames of your wedding are of people who have slept.
When Splitting Airports Across Your Guest List Makes Sense
You do not have to pick one. For a Tulum or Akumal wedding, we routinely see guest lists split cleanly: anyone with a convenient nonstop to TQO takes it, everyone else flies to CUN and drives. That is a sensible outcome and you should say so on the wedding website rather than pretending there is one right answer.
Splitting works badly in two cases. If you are running a group shuttle, two airports means two shuttles or a very long combined route, and the cost usually exceeds any savings. And if your venue is north of Playa del Carmen, TQO adds so much drive time that offering it as an option mostly generates confused emails.
