Skip-Gen Trips: Photos Without the Parents

Grandparents land in Cancun with the grandchildren and nobody else on the boarding pass. It used to be an unusual arrangement. In 2026 it is a category. Hilton's 2026 Trends Report found that 29 percent of travellers with children now take skip-gen trips, where the kids travel with grandparents only, and that 59 percent of parents say whoever pays for the trip decides how it runs. For a photography studio that changes real things. The person booking is often not the person legally able to sign for the children, the pace has to suit a seven-year-old and a seventy-two-year-old at once, and the people who most want the photographs are at home, three time zones away, waiting for a link. This is how we run those sessions.

What a skip-gen trip is, and why 2026 made it normal

A skip-gen trip skips the middle generation. Grandparents take the grandchildren, the parents stay home, and everyone gets something out of it: the kids get an adventure, the grandparents get uninterrupted time they will not get again, and the parents get a week to themselves. Cancun is a natural fit for it. It is a nonstop flight from most of the United States and Canada, the resorts are all-inclusive so a grandparent is not managing restaurant bills with two children in tow, and the medical infrastructure in the Hotel Zone is reassuringly close.

What surprised us is how quickly it stopped being an exception. Two years ago a booking with no parents in the group was a story. Now the studio photographs several a season, and they cluster in the same weeks: the last two weeks of June, mid-July, and the stretch between American Thanksgiving and Christmas when school schedules loosen and flights are cheap. If you are travelling in those windows, book the photographer earlier than you think, because those are also the weeks the studio fills first.

Who books, who pays and who decides

On a normal family session all three of those are the same person. On a skip-gen trip they split, and it is worth naming who is who before anyone sends a deposit. In our inbox the pattern is usually one of two. Either the grandparent books and pays, because the whole trip is their gift, or the adult child books and pays from home as a surprise and the grandparent simply shows up at the beach at the appointed hour. Hilton's finding that 59 percent of parents defer to whoever is paying holds up in practice: when the grandparents fund the trip, they set the schedule, and the parents at home agree to it.

Either arrangement is fine. What we ask for is one decision maker on the day. The studio needs a single person to answer the questions that come up in the first ten minutes, which shirt, whether we walk further down the beach, whether we push the start twenty minutes because someone is still in the shower. If a parent at home is going to have final say on any of that, tell us in advance and we will put them on WhatsApp with us during the session. Trying to run a golden-hour beach session by group chat consensus wastes the only forty minutes of good light we have.

Permission and photo release when the parents are at home

This is the part nobody thinks about until the morning of the session, so we handle it at booking. There are two separate documents and they do different jobs.

The first is the session agreement. Somebody has to sign it, and if the person standing in front of us is not the child's legal guardian, we ask the parent to sign it themselves by email before the session. It takes two minutes and it protects everyone. The second is the marketing release, which decides whether the studio may show your children's faces in a portfolio, on Instagram, or on this website. Our default with minors is no. We do not publish a photograph of a child unless a parent has separately and specifically agreed to it, and a grandparent cannot give that agreement on a parent's behalf. If you would like to say yes, we send that release to the parents directly.

Worth separating from all of this: the travel paperwork. Airlines and immigration authorities sometimes ask for a notarised letter of consent when a minor crosses a border without both parents, and the requirements change from year to year and from airline to airline. That has nothing to do with the photography, and we are not the right people to advise on it, but every skip-gen family should check with their airline and the Mexican consulate well before departure rather than at the check-in desk.

Session length and pacing with grandparents and young kids

A standard family session runs an hour. A skip-gen session usually runs shorter in practice even when it is booked for the same length, because the two ends of the age range tire at different times and in different ways. Children fade after about forty minutes of being asked to do anything. Grandparents fade from heat and from standing, and they are frequently too polite to say so.

So we build the session backwards. The frames that matter most get shot first, in the opening fifteen minutes: the whole group together, then each grandparent with each grandchild. After that we let it get loose, which is when the good frames happen anyway. We plan a place to sit inside the first ten minutes, a low wall, a lounger, a stretch of dry sand, and we use it as a set rather than as a break, so nobody feels they are holding things up. We also carry water. It sounds trivial. In Cancun in July it is not.

Sunrise is often the better call on a skip-gen trip, even though it means an early alarm. The beach is empty, the temperature is fifteen degrees kinder, and children are at their best. Quintana Roo stays on the same clock all year, so sunrise moves from about 6:05 in late June to about 7:20 in December, and sunset from about 6:10 in December to about 7:25 in June. Locations that work for both ends of the age range

The right location for a skip-gen session is the one with the shortest walk from the car or the room to the frame. That single rule eliminates most of the dramatic options and it is worth accepting cheerfully, because the light matters far more than the backdrop does.

In Cancun, the beach directly in front of the resort is almost always the answer. It is a two-minute walk, there is shade and a bathroom behind you, and on the Hotel Zone's bay side the water is calm enough for a grandparent to stand ankle deep with a toddler without either of them worrying. Puerto Morelos, forty minutes south, is our favourite alternative: a flat town square, a boardwalk, coloured fishing boats, benches everywhere, and no dunes to climb. Playa Mujeres and the northern beaches suit families who want quiet and long empty sand. On Isla Mujeres, Playa Norte is shallow for a long way out, which is why we recommend it for groups with both very small children and less mobile adults.

What we steer skip-gen groups away from: cenotes, where the steps are wet limestone and steep; the Tulum ruins, which involve a long walk in full sun; and any jungle location that requires a hike. Sending the gallery home: what parents want to see first

Every session we deliver goes into a private 4K gallery within one to three business days. On a skip-gen booking that gallery is doing an extra job, because the parents at home have been looking at blurry phone snaps all week and this is the first time they see their children properly.

So we sequence it differently. The parents want, in this order: their child's face, clearly, alone. Then their child with each grandparent. Then the group. Then everything else. We build skip-gen galleries in that order rather than chronologically, and we tell the grandparents to send the link before they mention it on the phone, because the reaction is better when it arrives unannounced.

One practical note. The gallery link is private and shareable, and grandparents share it widely, which is exactly what it is for. If the parents have asked that no images of the children go on social media, say so when you send the link. It is much easier to set that expectation once, at the top of the email, than to ask an aunt to take a post down afterwards.

Gifting the session: how adult children book it for their parents

This has become our favourite booking to receive. An adult child writes to the studio a few weeks before the trip, gives us the dates, the resort and the children's ages, pays, and asks us not to mention it. We then coordinate directly with the grandparent about seventy-two hours out, so it is a surprise but not an ambush, because nobody wants to be told about a photo session while they are still in a swimsuit with wet hair.

If you are doing this, three things make it work. Tell us what your parents are like, because a session with people who hate being photographed is designed differently than one with people who love it. Tell us what you actually want out of it, and be specific: a portrait of your mother with your daughter is a different brief than forty candid frames of the week. And give us a shirt-colour steer for the kids, since whoever packed the suitcase was probably you.
