Hotel Esencia is a boutique estate of about 50 acres on Xpu-Ha beach that began as an Italian duchess's retreat. Wedding listings name the beach for about 200 guests with a buyout, and the mansion for about 20; beach events need a permit, which the hotel coordinates.
Esencia feels less like a resort than a private estate: a main house, suites among gardens and one of the most beautiful beaches of the Riviera Maya. Weddings here are usually buyouts. Here is how we photograph them.

Where the Ceremony Happens
Xpu-Ha beach, about 200 guests with a buyout, is the main setting: wide, soft sand and clear water. Listings note that beach events require a permit, which the hotel coordinates. The Esencia mansion, about 20, suits intimate ceremonies and dinners with architecture and gardens around you.

The coast here faces east onto the open Caribbean, so the sun rises over the sea and sets behind the resort, leaving the beach in soft, even light at the end of the day. A good rule here: start the ceremony about 90 minutes before sunset, and keep the final half hour of daylight for portraits. From roughly September through April the sun rises from behind Cozumel, which makes a sunrise session here unusually striking.
Bringing Your Own Photographer
Expect Hotel Esencia to charge outside wedding vendors for access. Resorts call it a vendor fee, an outside supplier fee or a day pass, and they revise it by season and wedding package, which is why we do not print a number here. The moment to negotiate it is before you sign your wedding package; afterwards coordinators have little room. Ask whether it is charged per vendor or per person, and get the answer by email. We handle the paperwork with your coordinator.

Coverage and Prices
Our wedding prices are public. Up to four hours of coverage costs 1,800 to 2,800 USD; a full day of eight to ten hours with a second photographer is 3,500 to 5,500 USD; photography plus a wedding film is 5,500 to 8,000 USD. The resort's access charge for outside vendors is separate and paid to the hotel. Your edited gallery arrives within one to three business days.
