Thirty minutes, built on activity rather than posing, and it is the least expensive booking the studio takes. A father and son session is thirty minutes long, costs less than any other booking we take, and produces the frames that people write to us about a year later. It is also the session almost nobody thinks to ask for. The same travel pattern behind the rise in one-on-one parent and child trips, which Hilton's 2026 Trends Report puts at half of all parents with more than one child, applies here exactly, but the father and son version is even less served than the mother and daughter one. Our honest read is that men do not book photographs of themselves, so it usually arrives as somebody else's idea. It is a good idea.
Why one-on-one sessions land differently
Pull one child out of a family session and the whole dynamic changes. In a group frame, a father is a supporting structure: he is holding someone, standing behind someone, making sure everyone is in position. Alone with one son, he is a person again, and it shows in the pictures within about four minutes.
The other reason it works is that nobody is performing. Family portraits carry an expectation of the nice photo, everyone tidy and smiling at once. A father and son on a beach at sunrise with no audience is not trying to produce anything, so what we capture is closer to how they actually are together. That is the whole value of the session, and it is why we shoot it so differently from the group work.
It is also the least demanding thing we do. Thirty minutes, one location, no wardrobe co-ordination beyond two shirts, no schedule to defend. On a busy holiday that matters more than people expect.
What we shoot: activity over posing
We do not ask a father and son to stand somewhere and look at us. It produces the stiffest photographs in our entire archive, regardless of the son's age.
Instead we give them something to do. Walking into the water. Skimming stones. Carrying him on shoulders. Throwing him, which small boys will accept indefinitely and which produces the single most reliable good frame of the session. With older sons, walking and talking, or an actual conversation we start and then step away from. Football on wet sand works. So does simply swimming, if the water is calm and the light is low enough that we are not fighting glare.
The one posed sequence we always shoot is at the end, and it takes four minutes: the two of you side by side, looking at the camera, and then one frame of each of you alone. That is the printable one. Everything before it is the story.
Locations that suit a short, moving session
Thirty minutes means the location has to be within a few minutes of where you are staying, and it needs to work as you move rather than as a single backdrop.
The resort beach is the default and it is a good default: no travel, and we can start the moment the light drops. Beyond that, the coast between Puerto Morelos and Tulum gives us four reliable options. Puerto Morelos has a boardwalk, fishing boats and its leaning lighthouse, and the town is small enough that we can cover it on foot. Playa del Carmen's shoreline north of the busy centre gives long open sand with people thinned out at sunrise. Akumal bay is shallow, calm and framed by palms, and it is the one we suggest when a boy wants to be in the water rather than beside it. Xpu-Ha is the quietest of the four, wide and undeveloped compared with its neighbours.
Two honest warnings. Sargassum can affect any Caribbean-facing beach between roughly May and October, and the resorts vary a lot in how aggressively they clear it, so we check conditions the day before and will move you if your stretch is bad. And most all-inclusive resorts have rules about outside photographers on their sand, ranging from no problem at all to a vendor fee. What to wear and what to bring
Two shirts and no plan is genuinely enough. What we would suggest: linen or cotton in white, cream, sand, soft grey or a muted blue, sleeves rolled, nothing with a visible logo. If you want them to look related, put them in the same tone at different weights rather than the identical shirt, which reads as a costume. Chinos or shorts, both fine. Bare feet.
Bring a towel, a change of shirt for the child, and water. If your son has a thing, a ball, a mask and snorkel, a small skateboard, a favourite hat, bring that too. Objects give hands something to do and they date the photograph in a way that becomes valuable later. Nobody remembers what they wore in 2026. Everyone remembers the hat.
Sunglasses. They come off for the entire session. It is the single most common note we give, and the difference between a photograph of a man and a photograph of a father is usually his eyes.
Toddlers, teenagers and grown sons
With a toddler the session is physical and it is short: twenty minutes of carrying, spinning, chasing and shallow water, shot low and fast. Do not plan anything. Follow him.
Between about six and eleven is the easiest age we photograph. They will do anything you ask, they find the whole thing funny, and they have not yet learned to be self-conscious. If you are choosing when to do this once, do it here.
Teenagers need a task and no commentary. We keep them moving, avoid announcing the shot, and let the father carry the conversation. Ten minutes in, they stop noticing us. With grown sons, the session becomes something quieter and we treat it that way. These get booked around milestones: a fiftieth birthday, a wedding week, a father who has just retired, a son who has just moved abroad. We shoot fewer frames, we shoot them slower, and we always take one of the two of them standing together doing nothing at all.
Adding it to an existing family session
This is how most father and son sessions actually happen, and it is the cheapest way to get one. Book your family session as usual, and add thirty minutes onto the end of it.
The reason it works is light. A family session that starts an hour before sunset finishes right at the best part of the evening, when everyone is tired and the group frames are done. That is the perfect moment to release the rest of the family back to the room and keep two people on the sand. The light is at its warmest, the beach has emptied, and both of them have already forgotten there is a camera present. We do the same thing in reverse with mothers and daughters on the same booking.

Thirty minutes: a realistic shot list
This is the actual structure we run, and we are telling you so you can see how little of it involves standing still.
- Minutes 0 to 5. Walking together away from us along the waterline. No direction beyond keep talking. This is where the self-consciousness burns off.
- Minutes 5 to 12. The physical block. Shoulders, throwing, chasing, shallow water. With older sons, this becomes a ball or a swim.
- Minutes 12 to 18. Sitting. On the sand, at the waterline, on a boat or a wall. Talking to each other, not to us. The best frames of most sessions are in here.
- Minutes 18 to 24. Close work. Hands, profiles, a hug that we do not ask for twice, details that will mean something in twenty years.
- Minutes 24 to 28. The two of you side by side, looking at the camera. Two or three variations, standing and sitting.
- Minutes 28 to 30. One clean portrait of each of you alone.
