Couples boudoir is one of the fastest-growing session types in photography right now, and unlike most trends it is not being driven by imagery. It is being driven by couples in their thirties and forties booking a private hour on an anniversary trip, usually the one they took eight or twelve years after the wedding. Almost nobody on this coast writes about it plainly, which leaves couples guessing about the only things they actually want to know: how private is it, who ever sees the pictures, and what happens if we change our minds. Those are fair questions, so this guide answers them first and talks about the photographs second.
Why Couples Book This Together in 2026
Traditional boudoir was one person photographed as a gift for the other. The couples version is a different thing: both of you in the frame, in a private space, in a way that a beach session cannot do. The reasons people give us, in roughly the order we hear them, are an anniversary, an engagement, a reunion after a long stretch apart for work or military service, and a plain wish to have a record of this stage of a relationship rather than only the wedding day.
Two things make the Mexican Caribbean unusually good for it. The first is that couples are already here, in a villa or a suite they chose carefully, with time and privacy that home does not offer. The second is that the light on this coast is generous: large windows, white interiors, water reflections bouncing colour onto the ceiling. The room does most of the work.
It is also, honestly, easier with two people than with one. The self-consciousness that makes a solo boudoir session hard tends to dissolve when the other person is in the picture, because you are not being looked at, you are looking at each other. That is the whole technique, and it is why these sessions are usually calmer than couples expect.
You set the line, in writing, before the day. We agree in advance what is photographed and what is not, and during the session we work inside that agreement and never past it. Stopping early costs nothing and requires no explanation.
How a Session Runs, Minute by Minute
A typical private session is 90 minutes. Here is the shape of it, so nothing on the day is a surprise.
Minutes 0 to 15, arrival and setup. One photographer arrives, alone unless you asked for otherwise. We look at the windows, decide which side of the room we are working on, tidy anything the frame does not need, and switch off the yellow ceiling lights. Nobody takes a photograph in the first quarter of an hour. You get dressed at your own pace while we work.
Minutes 15 to 35, the easy part. We start fully clothed, usually robes or shirts, standing or sitting near the window, doing something ordinary. Talking, leaning, laughing at the awkwardness. This is deliberate. It gives your face somewhere to go before the camera is close.
Minutes 35 to 70, the main block. This is where the session goes wherever you agreed it goes. We direct clearly and simply, in English or Spanish, and we describe what a frame will look like before we make it. If something feels wrong, you say so and we change it. Nothing is negotiated in the moment.
Minutes 70 to 90, the quiet end. Back to robes, back to the window, often with the best frames of the session, because by now nobody is thinking about the camera. If a plunge pool, a terrace or a bath is part of the space, this is usually where it fits.
Privacy: Who Sees the Files and Where They Are Stored
This is the section that matters most, so it is written without hedging.
One person handles your files. The photographer who shot the session culls, edits and delivers them. Nothing goes to an outside retoucher, an assistant or a third-party editing service.
Delivery is a private, password-protected gallery. The link is yours. It is not indexed, it is not listed anywhere on our site, and it is not shared with anyone you have not shared it with. You download at full 4K resolution, as many times as you want.
The originals are not on a public service. They are not uploaded to a shared drive, they are not in a folder that other clients or contractors can reach, and previews are not sent through social media messaging.
You can have everything deleted. Ask us to take the gallery offline and we do it the same day. Ask us to delete the originals from the archive as well and we do that too, and confirm it in writing. On the day itself, if a frame makes you uncomfortable, we delete it on the spot from the card rather than promising to remove it later.

Publication Consent, and What We Never Post
Almost every photography contract in the world contains a clause letting the photographer use your images in a portfolio. For private sessions we invert it. The default is no.
Nothing from a couples boudoir session appears on our website, our Instagram, in an advertisement, in a print portfolio or in a client presentation unless you have separately and specifically said yes, image by image or gallery by gallery. Consent given for one session does not carry to another. Consent for a beach session never covers a private one. And consent can be withdrawn: tell us and the image comes down, without you needing to justify it.
There are things we do not publish even with permission, because there is no version of them that is safe once an image leaves your hands. We do not post frames where either person is identifiable and unclothed, we do not post anything involving the two of you and a third party, and we do not enter private-session work into competitions or submit it to publications. If you want a fully anonymous frame used, we will talk about it, and the answer is often still no.
What to Wear and What to Bring
Bring two or three options rather than eight, and keep every one of them simple.
The reliable set. A white or pale shirt, oversized. A slip or a plain robe. Well-fitting underwear in a solid colour, black, white, cream or a deep neutral. The bed linen itself, which is the most-used prop in the genre for a reason. Jeans, believe it or not, photograph beautifully with nothing above them.
What to avoid. Loud prints and logos, which date a photograph to the month it was taken. Anything brand new and unworn, which usually fits badly. And elastic: socks, tight waistbands, hair ties on wrists and sports bras leave marks on skin that stay visible for a good half hour, so take them off twenty minutes before we start.
Small things that help. Keep the jewellery you always wear, since it looks like you. Trim and simple nails photograph better than a fresh dramatic manicure. Skip a spray tan the same week, since it goes orange under warm window light and it transfers onto white linen. Drink water and eat something. And if you are nervous, one glass of wine is fine and three is not, for the obvious reason that it shows in the eyes.
Suite, Villa or Studio: Choosing the Space
A private villa is the most flexible option and the one we recommend for couples who want the full sequence. Nobody is on the other side of the wall, you can use the terrace and the plunge pool, and there is no property policy to negotiate. Villas around Tulum, Akumal and Puerto Aventuras are the usual choices.
A resort suite is simpler and cheaper because you already booked it. What matters is a large window or glass door and enough floor space to stand back. Check your property's outside vendor policy first: many resorts on this coast charge a vendor fee or require the photographer to be registered at the front desk in advance, and a few restrict lighting gear in guest areas. A dedicated indoor space gives the most control over light and the least personality. It suits couples who want a clean, graphic look and do not want the session to happen where they are sleeping. It is the least common of the three on this coast.
Whichever you pick, the practical requirement is the same: one good window, a door that locks, and air conditioning that works. The Riviera Maya is humid and a session in a warm room becomes uncomfortable quickly.
Cost and How It Fits Into an Anniversary Trip
We quote private sessions individually rather than publishing a rate card, and we would rather explain what moves the number than invent one here. Four things do: the length of the session, whether we travel to a villa in Tulum or work in a suite fifteen minutes from the studio, whether you want it as a standalone booking or as the private half of a session that also includes a beach block, and whether the resort charges an outside vendor fee, which is paid to the property and not to us. Send us your dates and the location and you get a real number in the same conversation, with nothing added afterwards.
On an anniversary trip the sensible structure is one booking with two halves: the private block in the room in the morning or early afternoon, and a short beach or coastline block at golden hour. How revealing does a couples boudoir session have to be?
Exactly as revealing as you decide, and no further. A large share of the sessions we photograph are shirts, slips, robes and bed linen, and they read as intimate because of proximity and expression rather than skin. We agree the boundary in writing before the day, we do not push it during the session, and if you want to stop earlier than planned we stop. Nobody is talked into anything on the day.
Who will see our photographs?
You, and only the people you choose to send the link to. The gallery is private and password protected. The photographer who shot the session is the only person who handles the files, they are not sent to an outside retoucher, and they are not stored on any public or shared service. We never use a couples boudoir gallery as a portfolio, a social post or an advertisement unless you have signed a separate release for specific images.
How long are our files kept, and can they be deleted?
Your gallery stays live so you can download at full 4K resolution, and you can ask us to take it offline at any time with one message.
