Guest count changes almost everything at a Cancún wedding: the venues you can use, how the resort package works, how long the family photos take and how much coverage you need. Around 20 guests, half-day coverage (1,800 to 2,800 USD) is usually enough. At 50, most couples choose a full day with a second shooter. At 100, a full day with a second shooter (3,500 to 5,500 USD) is the minimum we recommend.
Searches for small destination wedding packages are up 170% on Google Trends this fall, and the question behind them is always the same: what actually changes between an intimate wedding and a big one? After years of photographing weddings of every size on this coast, here is how we explain it, size by size, with the parts of the plan that change and the ones that do not.
The Big Picture
| 20 | 50 | 100 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ceremony | Beach, gazebo, terrace | Beach or garden | Large beach or lawn |
| Reception | One long table | Private terrace | Ballroom or beach |
| Family photos | 15 minutes | 25 minutes | 35 to 40 minutes |
| Coverage | Half day | Full day | Full day, 2 shooters |
For context, Zola's First Look Report 2026, a survey of more than 11,500 US couples, puts the average guest count at 145 for all weddings. Destination weddings are usually smaller, because every guest travels, and many couples are choosing intimate on purpose. Family photo times are rule-of-thumb estimates at about two minutes per group.
Around 20 Guests
At this size the wedding feels like a dinner party with a ceremony. You can use almost any space: a beach setup, a gazebo, a rooftop terrace or a restaurant's private room. Everyone fits at one long table, the speeches are personal and nobody is a stranger.
For photography, half-day coverage of up to four hours is usually enough: the last part of getting ready, the ceremony, family photos, portraits at golden hour and the first part of dinner. The most important thing at this size is the portrait time, because with so few people, there is room to slow down. Our guide to micro weddings in Cancún and Tulum has more ideas.
Around 50 Guests
At around 50 guests you start to need a dedicated reception space, such as a private terrace, a section of the beach or a garden, and the weekend usually grows a welcome party. It is also the size where most couples begin to feel they cannot be everywhere at once, which is exactly where a second photographer helps: one with the couple, one with the guests.
Most couples at this size choose full-day coverage, eight to ten hours with a second shooter, so that getting ready, the ceremony, the cocktail hour and the first part of the party are all covered without rushing the portraits.

Around 100 Guests
A wedding of 100 guests is an event in the full sense: a ballroom or large beach area, a stage or dance floor, a sound check, a timeline with many moving parts and usually two or three events across the weekend. The guests are not all close family, so the photos need to find the people who matter most to you in a big crowd.
At this size a full day with a second shooter is the minimum we recommend. A shared shot list of the family groups, sent before the wedding, saves 10 to 15 minutes on the day. Many couples add a cinematic highlight film, because a celebration this size moves too fast to remember in stills alone.
How Resort Packages Change With Size
Most weddings in Cancún happen at all-inclusive resorts, and their packages respond to size in a few predictable ways. Many resorts offer a basic wedding package that becomes complimentary when your group books a minimum number of room nights; the conditions vary by resort and change each year. Private receptions are usually priced per guest, so the gap between 20 and 100 guests grows quickly. Guests who are not staying at the resort need a day or event pass. And outside vendors, including photographers, may be charged a fee.
Ask every resort for these four numbers in writing before you sign: the room-night requirement, the per-guest price for a private event, the day-pass price and the outside vendor fee. Our guides to the hidden costs of all-inclusive packages and outside photographer fees explain each one.
Group Photos by Size
Group photos are the part of the day that grows fastest with the guest list. As a rule of thumb, each family group takes about two minutes to arrange and photograph, so 8 groups at a small wedding take about 15 minutes, while 18 groups at a large one take 35 to 40. Three things keep it short:
- A written list. Names, not just "cousins". Send it to us a week before.
- A helper. One family member who knows everyone and calls the next group.
- The right moment. Right after the ceremony, while everyone is still together and before the light turns golden for your portraits.
For a full wedding group photo with 100 guests, we use a higher point, such as a terrace or stairs, so every face is visible.
